Mechanism:

  • The T (minor) each allele causes lower levels of PEMT protein [R]. This causes lower phosphatidylcholine production in the liver. Probably slows the export of fat from liver, but is more likely in people overeating.
  • The C (major) allele= Normal levels of PEMT protein [R].

The T (minor) allele is associated with:

  • Increased risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease [R].
  • Possible increased risk of becoming overweight [R].
  • Possible decreased levels of HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) [R].
  • Increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease in Chinese women [R].
  • Decreased risk of having an infant with a neural tube defect [R].

The C (major) allele is associated with:

  • Decreased risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease [R].
  • Possible decreased risk of becoming overweight [R].
  • Possible increased levels of HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) [R].
