After eating salty foods, the body normally attempts to dilute the high levels of sodium by retaining water. Excessive water retention increases your blood volume, which puts more pressure on blood vessels [R].
Natriuretic peptides are short chains of amino acids that help regulate blood pressure by stimulating the kidneys to eliminate sodium (“natri”) via the urine (“uretic”). These peptides are also able to promote blood vessel dilation [R, R].
The NPR3 gene codes for natriuretic peptide receptor 3 (NPR3). NPR3 binds circulating natriuretic peptides and clears them from the body [R].
While the description above implies that high levels of NPR3 may raise blood pressure by lowering the availability of natriuretic peptides, one recent study has reported that activation of NPR3 by C-type natriuretic peptide may instead mediate blood vessel dilation [R].
Moreover, a recent study linked the blood pressure-raising ‘G’ allele at SNP rs1173771 to reduced production of NPR3 in muscle cells that line blood vessels [R].
Taken together, the above studies suggest that the effects of NPR3 are dependent on the type of natriuretic peptide that binds to it, and the type of cell in which it’s found [R].
Variants of NPR3 have been associated with high blood pressure. These variants may alter the production or activity of NPR3, resulting in elevated blood volumes and contraction of blood vessels [R, R].
