The function of ANKRD55 isn’t very well understood, but it is abundant in immune tissues like the lymph nodes and has been strongly linked to autoimmunity. Because of this, it is assumed to play a role in inflammatory signalling [R, R].

The IL6ST gene encodes a protein called interleukin 6 signal transducer; this protein affects the binding of cytokines, including IL-6, to their receptors on the surface of cells. IL-6 has been heavily implicated in rheumatoid arthritis through its influence on pathological inflammation. Rheumatoid arthritis patients tend to have significantly higher IL-6 levels than healthy people, and this high IL-6 can lead to increased destruction of joint tissues [R, R].
