TLRs and Th1 Immunity in Allergy Prevention

TLR10 belongs to a group of genes encoding vital immune system receptors (toll-like receptors or TLRs). They recognize parts of different microbes, supporting their removal [R, R].

TLR receptor activation by pathogens stimulates different inflammatory cytokines that promote Th1 and suppress Th2 immunity. Allergies are Th2-dominant states, so adequate TLR activity is crucial for their prevention, especially during the immune system development [R, R, R].

The above pathways are central to the “hygiene hypothesis,” suggesting that the lack of microbial exposure in early childhood may contribute to allergic diseases [R, R].
