Scientists discovered a new role of the BCL6 gene: it helps prevent allergies! Read this post to check your variants and get gene-based tips to reduce allergic reactions.

Summary

The BCL6 gene helps prevent allergic reactions by suppressing Th2 immunity and reducing IL-4 and IgE levels.

Certain gene variants reduce BCL6 activity and correlate with higher odds of allergic diseases.

In this post, we reveal simple and effective ways to relieve allergies by targeting your BCL6 variants.

The BCL6 Gene in Th2 Immunity and Allergic Reactions

The BCL6 gene controls the activity of different immune cells and proteins involved in allergic reactions. Primarily, BCL6 suppresses Th2 immunity by blocking IL-4 production [R, R, R].

Th2 immune response and IL-4 release stimulate B cells to produce IgE antibodies, which play a central role in allergies. BCL6 protects against allergies by preventing this chain reaction [R].

The BCL6 gene helps prevent allergic reactions by suppressing Th2 immunity and reducing IL-4 and IgE levels.

SNP Table

variant genotype frequency risk allele
rs9865818
rs519973
rs73196739

Primary SNP:

rs9865818 [R, R]:

  • ‘G’ – associated with higher odds of allergic diseases
  • ‘A’ – not associated with allergic diseases
  • The ‘G’ allele reduces BCL6 activity

Other Important SNPs:

rs519973 [R, R]:

  • ‘A’ – associated with higher odds of allergic diseases
  • ‘G’ – not associated with allergic diseases
  • The ‘A’ allele likely reduces BCL6 activity

rs73196739 [R]:

  • ‘C’ – associated with relatively higher odds of allergic diseases
  • ‘T’ – associated with lower odds of allergic diseases
  • The ‘T’ allele likely increases BCL6 activity

These variants are also near the LPP gene, but they influence BCL6 activity.

Recommendations

Diet

Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean diet may reduce IL-4 levels in asthmatic children. This diet is rich in olive oil, which may suppress IL-4 [R, R].

A meta-analysis associated adherence to the Mediterranean diet with a slightly reduced incidence of asthma and wheezing [R].

The Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil may prevent allergies, especially asthma, by targeting your BCL6 variants.

Supplements

Butterbur

Butterbur can inhibit allergen-induced Th2 immunity and IL-4 release, reducing airway inflammation and sensitivity [R].

A standardized butterbur extract (ZE 339) was safe and effective at improving allergic rhinitis, both seasonal and chronic, in multiple clinical trials. A different extract (Petaforce) was similarly effective in people with pollen allergy [R, R, R, R, R].

Butterbur extract also improved asthma symptoms when added to standard treatment in two clinical trials [R, R].

Butterbur extract may counteract your gene variants and help relieve allergies.

Also keep in mind that the “Risk Score” presented in this post is based only on a select number of SNPs, and therefore only represents a small portion of your total risk as an individual. Furthermore, these analyses are based primarily on associational studies, which do not necessarily imply causation. Finally, many other (non-genetic) factors can also play a significant role in the development of a disease or health condition — therefore, carrying any of the risk-associated genotypes discussed in this post does not necessarily mean you are at increased risk of developing a major health condition.

Always consult your doctor before acting on any information or recommendations discussed in this post — especially if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have been officially diagnosed with a medical condition.
