The WNT10A gene encodes a protein called wingless-type MMTV integration site family, member 10A. This protein is abundant in the skin and has been implicated in a number of different types of cancer [R, R].
WNT10A is believed to play an important role in the development of hair follicles and in the growth cycle of hair. This gene has been implicated in a group of disorders called ectodermal dysplasias [R, R].
Patients with ectodermal dysplasias typically have symptoms associated with dysregulated or faulty skin and tooth structures, including [R, R]:
- Abnormal teeth
- Abnormal fingernails
- Brittle or absent hair
- Inability to sweat
- Other skin problems
