The RREB1 gene codes for Ras responsive element-binding protein 1 (RREB-1). Studies have shown that RREB-1 may act in concert with other proteins to turn genes on or off, depending on the gene, cell type, and context [R, R, R, R].
RREB-1-induced gene regulation may partly be mediated by Ras, a family of signaling proteins [R, R].
Ras activity may be essential for regulating genes involved in the hair growth cycle, in which hair grows within a follicle, detaches from the follicle, and falls out. It’s been suggested that Ras proteins may specifically become activated during hair growth and inactivated during hair detachment [R, R].
Interestingly, studies have demonstrated that both over- and underactivity of Ras perturb the hair growth cycle and promote progressive hair loss. This suggests that balanced Ras activity is essential for maintaining hair integrity [R].
A variant of RREB1 has been associated with male-pattern baldness. While the mechanism is unclear, it’s possible that this variant may alter RREB-1 production or activity, resulting in Ras dysregulation and hair cycle perturbation [R, R].
