Myocyte enhancer factor-2 (Mef2) are proteins (transcription factors) which are important for muscle development and production/differentiation. In adult tissues, Mef2 proteins help heart muscles grow and remodel when stressed. (Ref) The mitochondria also uses MEF2D (complex I) and less MEF2D function can cause neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinsons in animal models (Ref). MEF2D helps neuron survival, but in Parkinsons, MEF2D builds up because junk proteins (a-synuclein) dont let autophagy or recycling of it to take place (Ref). Too little MEF2D causes migraines and MEF2D SNPs show increased migraine risk. MEF2 activates AMPK.
