At the site of infection or injury, Mac-1 may prevent various immune cells from becoming activated or from developing into inflammatory cell types. Mac-1 may also promote the removal of dying cells and foreign invaders [R, R, R, R, R, R].
The actions of Mac-1 may therefore be crucial to preventing excessive inflammation, tissue damage, and the production of antibodies that target the body’s own tissues (autoantibodies) [R, R, R, R, R, R].
For example, Mac-1 may partly prevent inflammation and autoantibody formation by stimulating the immune suppressor A20 and blocking the activity of NF-kB [R, R, R, R, R].
