The FCGR2B gene codes for Fc fragment of IgG receptor IIb (Fc gamma receptor IIb), a receptor that suppresses the activity of various immune cells and thus regulates immune responses [R, R].
For example, Fc gamma receptor IIb can be found on the surfaces of B cells. B cells play essential roles in the production and release of antibodies, including those that mistakenly target parts of the body (autoantibodies) [R, R].
Notably, Fc gamma receptor IIb may also function to inhibit the release of inflammatory proteins, as well as control the growth and expansion (proliferation) of immune cells [R].
Mice that lack Fc gamma receptor IIb have been reported to develop autoantibodies and symptoms characteristic of the autoimmune disorder lupus [R, R, R].
