Note: This SNP is located near the HRK (hara-kiri) and FBXW8 genes [R]. Interestingly, it also influences in the expression levels (transcription activity) of the TESC (tescalin) gene, despite not actually being located within the TESC gene itself [R, R].
The TESC gene suppresses the RELN gene [R]. One of RELN's functions is to promote neurogenesis. This means that high TESC gene levels may impair neurogenesis. This interaction probably explains why this SNP has been associated with neurogenesis, brain size (e.g. hippocampal volume), and even certain cognitive functions, such as verbal intelligence [R, R, R].
