AVPR1A (Arginine vasopressin receptor 1A)

Loading...

Summary of AVPR1A

Receptor for arginine vasopressin. Has been involved in social behaviors, including affiliation and attachment.

Variations in the vasopressin receptor can alter the risk of substance abuse and marital stability in males [R].

There is an association between genes that have increased AVPR1A gene expression and lower altruism, a higher risk of autism, lower social activity (extraversion) [R+].

For instance, vasopressin has been shown to decrease social communication in male subjects and increase it in female subjects. Vasopressin is more influential in males and oxytocin is more influential in females [R].

In animals, vasopressin helps socializing, whereas in people it may cause social avoidance. The possibility exists in people for a compensatory effect of the dopamine system which can result in higher sociability traits [R].

There's evidence that vasopressin and its receptors can both increase or decrease anxiety [R+].
