Summary
Preeclampsia is sudden high blood pressure during pregnancy, which usually starts around the 20th week. It affects about 5% of pregnant women and can lead to organ damage, pregnancy complications, and even death if left untreated.
It is characterized by complex symptoms including maternal HYPERTENSION and PROTEINURIA with or without pathological EDEMA. Symptoms may range between mild and severe. Pre-eclampsia usually occurs after the 20th week of gestation, but may develop before this time in the presence of trophoblastic disease.
